In the spring of 2014 I approached Theresa Riccardi, the choir director at High Point, and told her that I wanted to compose a piece for the Chamber Singers, our select choir. She was very excited about the idea and we began talking about the piece. I approached my friend Will Crane, who also wrote the text to my other choir piece, and asked him to write the text for this new work as well. He didn't disappoint and gave me a beautiful poem capturing what I like to call "contented melancholy".

I wanted this piece to capture that feeling of vague happiness you get sometimes when you're sad. It's almost like you're happy to be feeling emotions other than just "normal". The text has a lot of beautiful imagery involving nature and the changing of seasons when it seems like the color is being sucked out of the world. It was an absolute pleasure working on this piece with the Chamber Singers and seeing/hearing it come to life!
